What can the AI coach actually do?
Six things: (1) Build me a program: 12-week plan from your goal, schedule, equipment. (2) What should I train today: prescribed session for now, adjusted for last week. (3) Why am I stuck on this lift: plateau diagnosis with one specific intervention. (4) Should I deload: reads volume, RPE, missed reps and tells you yes/no. (5) Swap this exercise: 2 to 3 substitutions for a busy gym, broken machine, or injury. (6) Coach me through this set: a one-line cue before a heavy set.
How is the PR calculated?
Using the Epley formula: estimated 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30). A set of 80kg×5 reps is compared against 100kg×1 rep on the same scale. Updates automatically when you beat your estimated 1RM.
Can I add my own exercises?
Yes. In the exercise picker, tap "+ Custom exercise" for the current muscle group. Enter the name (40 char max), pick the equipment, tick "counts as bodyweight" if it does. It saves permanently alongside the built-in library and carries a transient YOURS tag for the first 7 days so you can spot your own additions.
Can I import history from another app or spreadsheet?
Yes. Open the History tab, tap "Import history", and paste a CSV. The parser auto-detects Strong, Hevy, FitNotes, JeFit, Renpho exports and falls back to a generic header-row CSV (date, exercise, sets, weight, reps). Preview shows what will be imported, with duplicate sessions skipped against what you already logged. Premium members can email any messy format to help@blacknave.com and we will migrate it.
How do supersets work?
In an active session, tap "+ Start a superset" below the exercise list. Pick the next exercise, then pick the second. Both cards group into a single block with a 2px terracotta left-rule, a SUPERSET · ROUND R OF T eyebrow, and a NEXT cue that walks you through the interleave order (A1, B1, A2, B2…). Tap ⤴︎ Ungroup any time to flatten them back out. The AI Coach reads this so "how was your push day?" reflects the actual structure, not a misleading flat list.
Can I log which machine or cable position I used?
Yes. Under each exercise card in the active session, tap "+ Note · Machine" to expand two inline fields · MACHINE / CABLE # (e.g. "Stack 12, position B") and NOTES. Once filled, a small terracotta tag appears below the exercise name and rides along in your history. The AI Coach reads this so "what cable position did I use last time" actually gets answered.
Does it work without internet?
Logging works fully offline. AI actions need internet to call the model. All your session data is stored on your device.
How is this different from Strong, Hevy, or Boostcamp?
Strong and Hevy log; they don't coach. Boostcamp gives you a static program; it doesn't know what you actually did this week. Gym Coach reads your real session data and adapts the program every week. Can I use it on my phone at the gym?
