AI Coach vs prompt-pack PDF: what actually changed (and why we rebuilt 4 products)

Four of our products used to be prompt-pack PDFs you'd paste into ChatGPT. They're now AI coaches that read your data. Here's why the rebuild was necessary, and what changed for the user.

11 May 2026

In May 2026 we converted four products from "prompt packs you paste into ChatGPT" into AI Coaches that read your saved data and answer in-line. This post explains why the change was necessary, what the user experience actually looks like now, and where the boundary still is between an AI Coach and a real human one.

What a prompt-pack product used to be

The original Finance Prompts, Interview Prep, Salary Negotiation, and LinkedIn Rewriter products were exactly what they sounded like: curated libraries of well-structured prompts, plus fill-in-the-blank fields for your specific situation. You'd fill in your details, click Copy, paste into ChatGPT or Claude, and get an answer.

That worked for a year. It was honest value — most people's biggest blocker with AI tools is knowing what to ask, and a curated prompt library solves that. But it stopped being enough as ChatGPT itself got better and free-tier became more capable. The differentiator was disappearing.

The problem with "paste into ChatGPT"

Three concrete failures we kept seeing:

  • The context never travelled. The prompt for "should I take this job offer" doesn't include your debt, your runway, your spouse's salary, your last 3 months of expenses. You'd paste the prompt, ChatGPT would ask follow-ups, you'd answer 7 of them, then your context window timed out and you started over.
  • The advice was generic by default. Even with great prompts, ChatGPT doesn't know that your real take-home is $4,200/month or that your emergency fund is $8,000 or that you have a $19,000 student loan at 6.8%. So the advice was right-on-average and wrong-for-you.
  • Friction killed adherence. Open Blacknave, fill in the fields, copy, switch to ChatGPT, paste, wait, copy the answer, switch back. Five context-switches per question. Most users tried it twice and stopped.

What an AI Coach actually changed

The same four products are now integrated AI Coaches. You stay in the Blacknave tab. You click ✦ Ask AI Coach. The AI sees:

  • The prompt you picked (e.g. "draft a counter-offer email")
  • Any specifics you typed into the prompt fields
  • Your saved data from related tools (debt balances, take-home pay, FIRE number, jobs you're tracking)
  • Your conversation history with this coach (so follow-ups don't restart the context)

Two seconds later, you have the answer inline, in your currency, calibrated to your situation. The differentiator isn't the prompt anymore — it's the data layer underneath. ChatGPT doesn't have your data; the AI Coach does.

Three concrete before-and-after examples

Finance Coach (was Finance Prompts)

Old version: "Should I prioritise paying down my 6.8% student loan or maxing my 401(k) match?" Paste into ChatGPT. It asks 4 follow-ups about your situation. You answer them. It gives a generic framework.

New version: same question, asked inline. The AI Coach reads your Debt Payoff Planner, sees the loan is $19,200 at 6.8% with $250 minimums, reads your Budget Auditor to see your savings rate, reads your Net Worth tracker for your match status, and tells you specifically: "Max the match first (free money beats 6.8% guaranteed). Then $400/month extra to the loan — that finishes it in 36 months instead of 84."

Interview Prep Coach (was Interview Prep Prompts)

Old version: Prompt template for "STAR-format answer to: tell me about a time you failed." Fill in your details, paste into ChatGPT, get a generic STAR answer.

New version: Same STAR prompt, but the AI Coach reads your Job Application Tracker to see what role you're prepping for (Senior Engineer at Stripe). It writes the STAR answer weighted toward distributed systems failures (because Stripe's interview loop emphasises that), not the generic "I missed a deadline once" example you'd get otherwise.

Salary Negotiation Coach (was Salary Negotiation Scripts)

Old version: Library of 40 negotiation script templates. Fill in offer, target, leverage. Paste into ChatGPT.

New version: The AI Coach reads Job Tracker to see your offers in progress, reads Freelance Rate Calculator if you've computed your floor, reads Net Worth to see whether you have FU money. Writes one specific counter-offer email using your actual leverage, in three paragraphs, ready to send.

What didn't change

  • The prompt library is still there. Every original prompt is still in the product. The Copy button is still there. If you want to paste into ChatGPT or Claude yourself, you still can. The AI Coach is the additional, faster path — not a replacement.
  • The pricing didn't change. Same subscription tier, same products included.
  • Your data isn't trained on. Same as before: your data stays in your account, never goes into model training, never gets shared.

Where AI Coaches still aren't a human coach

Worth being explicit. An AI Coach is excellent at:

  • Drafting in your voice, in your situation, in 2 seconds
  • Reading your data and giving math-grounded recommendations
  • Stress-testing your assumptions with follow-up questions

An AI Coach is not yet:

  • A licensed financial planner (regulatory boundary — for actual investment advice in a regulated sense, see a CFP)
  • A therapist (the mood journal helps you notice patterns; a therapist treats them)
  • A career mentor with insider knowledge of a specific company

For everything between "Google search" and "$200/hour human professional," the AI Coach is the right tool. We were honest about that boundary in the prompt-pack era and we're still honest about it now.

The takeaway

If you used Blacknave's prompt-pack products before May 2026 and didn't see what the fuss was, try them again. The framework is the same; the depth is different. Finance Coach, Interview Prep Coach, Salary Negotiation Coach, and LinkedIn Rewriter Coach all work this way now.
